Gordon Baldwin is one of the most important ceramic sculptors of the last seventy years. Born in 1932 in Lincolnshire, he studied painting at the Lincoln School of Art and ceramics at the Central School of Art. He taught for most of his life: at Central, at Goldsmiths College and at the Royal College of Art. He also ran the art department at Eton College for many decades. His influence was enormous, both on several generations of ceramic artists, including the “New Ceramics” group and their successors, and on many of his students at Eton who then became artists, architects or joined the creative professions in other guises. His work in the Fifties was figurative, informed by his teachers at central, Eduardo Paolozzi and William Turnbull. From the Sixties he started working on progressively more abstract forms, influenced primarily by the surrealists: Giacometti, Arp and Brancusi were crucial in the development of his sensibility. Over the years he became more interested in the notion of vessel and in that of contained space, exploring the idea of “inscape” and the relationship between form and painted surface. His interests and sources were very wide, touching on poetry and literature, modern and contemporary music and contemporary dance. Nature and the landscape of North Wales were also important reference points. Gordon Baldwin exhibited extensively from the mid-fifties, both in the UK and in Continental Europe. Degree show, Central School of Art and Design From Richard Slee 27th June 2023 &nbsp; Richard Slee was a student of Gordon Baldwin at Central School of Art and Design from 1965 to 1970. “As a tutor at the central school of Art Gordon taught us first years hand-built ceramics one day a week, somehow one was expected to make sculptural work and not pots. My memory is of a project at one time setting us to make a large candlestick prompted by his angered disapproval of Hans Copers candlesticks for Coventry Cathedral. I wonder what he would have made. The ceramics department was small a total of around 30 students over our three years so Gordon had a continued presence for us all. His teaching style was energetically conversational, serious always individual. His teaching day was long continuing into the evening when he would often be making his own work a privilege to see. Later in my third and final year I remember a heated discussion with him over my work which at that time started to reference pottery iconography. He disapproved thinking it was not serious, flippant. The result of a then young proto-post modernist meeting a true Modernist. A lasting personal visual memory is of a slender figure a silhouette in a black polo nec with beautiful and I guess expensive chelsea boots. Gordon Baldwin was a central figure of British modernism. He redefined the potential of clay as an artistic medium with his organic, often asymmetrical sculptures and their textured surfaces. The exhibition presents around 40 works from five decades and explores the concept of the vessel in drawing and ceramic sculpture as a poetic medium. The title Inscape, a term coined by the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, describes a dynamic where inner life branches into the world. Baldwin gives body to this notion through his vessels, where the self pulsates between inwardness and a vast, ever-shifting landscape, resonating continuously between grounding and disorientation, a sense of belonging and the feeling of being exposed to the world. The 280-page publication brings together the widest record of Baldwin’s ceramic sculpture in over 750 images from museums, galleries and private collections around the world, together with his little-known drawings and unpublished poetry for the first time. The publication offers long overdue recognition of the groundbreaking artist, curator and teacher, and offers a full assessment of the artist’s wide creative output. Arranged according to the major decades of Baldwin’s career, each chapter begins with an explanatory text by Natalie Baerselman le Gros (Curator, Writer and Editor specialising in ceramic arts) and features essays on Baldwin’s curatorial activities by Helen Walsh (Curator of Ceramics at the Centre of Ceramic Art, York) and on Baldwin’s poetry by Anthony Gardner (Author, Poet and Journalist). The publication concludes with testimonials from key figures taught or influenced by Baldwin. This monograph has been published independently by a group of admirers, in collaboration with the artist and his family. Tommaso is the owner of Corvi-Mora gallery in London, which has championed the work of ceramic artists for many years. He is also an artist and his work features in the Crafted in Clay trail. The work in this exhibition spans forty years, from the mid-1980s until today and also features two works from the 1870s by the Martin Brothers, early forerunners of studio potters. The exhibition revolves around the work of artists who either focus on the vessel as a starting point of their investigation or who adopt the model of the studio potter – an artist following the whole process of making ceramics from beginning to end, working alone in the studio – to structure their own practice.
